During my Valley City Permit Grounds headstone reading I came upon this partially embedded headstone. I dug around the front of the stone - and deep - in order to read the inscription thereon. This is the wartime memorial stone of Private Thomas Kennedy of the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry. I marked his stone with a Veteran marker to make it easier to find. I also marked it with a flag but this has been stolen.
9TH PA. CAV.
Thomas Kennedy served with the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry in the Civil War.
He enlisted on 30 October 1861 and served for 3 years.
Thomas mustered out on 18 July 1865.
Thomas' stone was firmly embedded in the soil. No inscription could be seen.
An attempt was made to unbury and raise the stone but...
stone was too heavy for a single person. Stone would not budge.
I contacted the cemetery to have stone raised but they
don't seem too interested in doing so.
A Veteran of the United States deserves better.
Thank you for your service Private Thomas Kennedy.
